Do we have to pay a Tourist Tax?

Yes, everyone staying at this accommodation, which is located in the municipality of Lagoa, must pay a tourist tax to the municipality. This applies even if you are Portuguese or have a residential address nearby. The municipality has required all hosts of accommodations to collect the tourist tax in cash. Guests should place the amount in the envelope found in the apartment. The money is then transferred to the municipality.

The tourist tax is calculated based on the number of adult persons multiplied by the number of nights stayed, multiplied by the tax rate. An adult is defined as someone aged 13 or older. The tax is paid for up to 7 nights of accommodation. The tax rate is 2 Euros in the high season and 1 Euro in the low season. If there are 3 adults staying for 4 nights, the tourist tax in the high season would be 3 x 4 x 2 Euros = 24 Euros. The money is used by the municipality to maintain and improve facilities related to tourism.

We live in your apartment and we´re empty of toilet paper. When will you come and deliver more?

Our apartments are self-catering. This means that guests themselves buy consumables that are necessary for the stay, such as food, drinks, soap and toilet paper. The apartment contains the essentials for the start of your stay. Hotels and hotel rooms have a different concept and cannot be directly compared.

The rental price we charge you does not include the use of consumables. When you check out, we hope you will leave a value similar as what you consumed of the original consumables. Thanks!

How far away is the beach?

The distance to the closest beach is about a 15-minute walk or 5 minutes by car.

Does your pool area have plenty of available space?

Sorry, there is no pool at this property.

I booked on Booking.com but I had to cancel. Can you refund the amount I paid?

For questions about refunds, please contact the site where you booked your stay. In this case, Booking.com. You used your card on Booking.com, so we are not in possession of your money. From Booking.com, we receive a portion of the guests´ payment approximately two weeks AFTER the guests have stayed in our apartment. Since you have not stayed with us, we haven´t received your payment. Therefore, there is nothing we can refund.

When booking on Booking.com, Airbnb or other booking channels, their cancellation policy applies. If you had booked on our site sunshine-rentals.com, our refund terms would apply. You must look at the cancellation policy that you accepted when you booked. These terms will determine whether you are entitled to a refund or not.

If there is a chance that you may cancel, it is important to look at the refund policy BEFORE you complete the booking process. Otherwise, you may lose all or a part of the payment.

Why do I have to pay a surcharge to use the hot tub? And how much does it cost?

The surcharge is €30 for the first day and €10 for each subsequent day.

  • This gives you a clean hot tub with fresh water, a new filter and the right chemicals.
  • The hot tub consumes about 1000 litres of water for each cleaning and filling, depending on the model. To save water, which is a limited resource in Portugal, we fill it only for guests who want to use it. Otherwise, filling the hot tub would be wasteful since the water cannot stay in the hot tub for a long period of time without being changed.
  • You can adjust the water temperature up to 40 degrees Celsius. The water is heated 1-2 degrees per hour with the top cover on. When there is enough time between cleaning and your check-in, you can add preheating when you book the hot tub.

The surcharge does not equally represent our actual costs related to the purchase of the hot tub, cleaning products, equipment, cleaning services, filters, chemicals, water, electricity and labour. Our costs are, in fact, higher.

Is the terrace on the rooftop?

Yes, the terrace is on the roof, at the top of the building. The roof terrace is not on the same floor or directly connected to the apartment.

Outside of the apartment is a stairway that leads to the terrace featuring stunning views of Ferragudo!

Is the roof terrace private for us alone? Or do we share the terrace with other guests?

The roof terrace is private for your apartment. You do not have to share it with other guests.

The terrace is divided into several sections, one for each apartment. A wall with a non-transparent glass divider separates the terraces for our two apartments. You get your own private roof terrace.

Can you store our luggage before check-in or after check-out?

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer luggage storage before check-in or after check-out. Since our private apartments do not have a reception area or on-site staff, there is no secure space for storing belongings. Additionally, our cleaning crew—who may not be our own employees—cannot take responsibility for any personal items left in the apartment while they prepare the space.

For security reasons, guests do not have access to the apartment outside of their reserved stay, meaning it is not possible to drop off or collect luggage at an earlier or later time.

If you are traveling by rental car or your own vehicle, you may store your luggage there and lock the car. Parking outside the apartment is free. Alternatively, we recommend checking local options such as luggage lockers or services available at nearby hotels or transport hubs.

What chemicals are used in the hot tub?

The hot tub is an inflatable jacuzzi from the brand Bestway. We do not use chlorine, as it could cause the colours to fade. Instead, we use specialised tablets designed for this type of hot tub.

  • Specifically, we use "Bromogene" from this producer: https://www.productosqp.com/bromogene.html.

The chemicals are essential to prevent bacteria and fungi from growing in the hot tub’s pump and pipes. For this reason, it is not possible to operate the hot tub without using chemicals.

When I book directly at Sunshine Rentals, do I pay with credit card, Paypal or cash?

Our payment provider is Stripe, a well-known and secure payment provider.

When booking, you pay with a debit card or a credit card. You pay 10% upfront when you book the accommodation. The remaining 90% is automatically charged to your card two weeks before your check-in. If you book a stay less than 2 weeks in advance, you pay the full price when you book.

Is it mandatory to submit the registration form?

Yes. Registration is mandatory. The online Guest Registration Form can be found via the menu. There are several reasons why you need to provide us with your name and address:

  • We need to know who we give access to our private apartment for safety reasons. Similarly to how you share your information and ID with Booking.com or Airbnb, we require that information as well.
  • Hotels and resorts usually have a 24-hour front desk where staff will ask you to fill out a registration form on paper and request to make a copy of your ID/passport at check-in. We do not have a reception. Therefore, we require you to register online.
  • We need information regarding every guest! "Guests of guests" is not allowed. In some cases, 10 people may show up when the apartment has only been booked for 5. This is a violation of our rental registration. In addition, the apartment is not suitable for more than what is stated as the maximum limit.
  • For all non-Portuguese nationals, we are required by law to collect this information.
